An Aotearoa Summer

I choose to start Rio's summer story today mostly because yesterday we moved into the house we are going to be house-sitting and the entire day today has felt so like the summers of my childhood. Rio sits outside on the verandah and watches tractors drive past hoovering up mowed grass and turning it into hay bails; the air smells fresh here, warm with sun but damp a little from long grass and shady undergrowth; inside the house there is no TV and Rio makes her own fun with games and an imaginary friend named Molly, when she's not outside singing Let it Go at the top of her lungs while swinging gloriously from a tire swing; we eat on a table outside while flies buzz past smellng dinner and chickens cluck too waiting for theirs. Tonight we might sleep with the doors open to let in the breeze, or sleep on the couch near a warm fire, knotted up in eachothers arms. We are in New Zealand you know.
